How To Grow Wheatgrass And Sprouts - YouTube

I started thinking about automating the production of sprouts, microgreens and wheatgrass for my own daily consumption.  I was looking for an automatic way to be able to grow these healing superfoods, and invested money into electronic sprinkler timers, valves, tubing, plumbing fittings and built a rack for it all to go into.

After trial and error of a couple weeks, I found out, that to grow enough for two people I only need 5-10 minutes a day, (there are 1440 minutes in a day).

Here's the method that is best explained as to how to.  Maybe I will make my own how-to one day that explains everything including some minor things he left out.

Nutritional Values of Wheatgrass and How to Order
Wheatgrass is one of the so-called green foods that are valued by health-conscious individuals as a great natural source of nutrients. In juice form it contains 70% chlorophyll, which is often referred to as the blood of plant  life. It closely resembles the molecules of human red blood cells. Chlorophyll  has been shown to produce an unfavorable environment for bacterial growth in the body and therefore effective in increasing the body's resistance to illness.  Wheatgrass is considered to be a complete food in itself. The fact is that  one pound of fresh wheatgrass is equivalent in nutritional value to 23 pounds  of choice garden vegetables. Due to its fibrous nature, which is indigestible  by humans, wheatgrass must be liquefied before it can be consumed
Wheatgrass is known as an alternative cancer therapy. Drinking of wheat  grass juice helps your body to build red blood cells which carry oxygen to every  cell. By increasing the oxygenation the body you can help offset smog and  carbon monoxide and increase your endurance during physical exercise.
Wheatgrass has been found to dissolve scars formed in the lungs and in  addition helps wash drug deposits from the body, purifies the blood and organs  and counteracts acids and toxins in the body. It helps to increase the enzyme  level in our cells, aiding in the rejuvenation of the body and the metabolism  of nutrients.  These enzymes assist in dissolving tumors.
This nutrient-rich grass contains 17 amino acids which are the building  blocks of proteins. The body uses these amino acids for things like building  muscle tissue, repairing cells and clotting the blood.
Wheatgrass retains 92 of  the 102 minerals found in the soil. These minerals include calcium,  phosphorus, iron, magnesium and potassium. It is a rich natural source of vitamins A  and C. Wheatgrass has more vitamin C than oranges and twice the vitamin A of  carrots. It is exceptionally rich in vitamins E, K, and B-complex. It is also a  natural source of laetrile (B-17). Wheatgrass produces an immunization  effect against many dietary carcinogens.
Growing wheatgrass to about seven inches tall is optimum for its health  benefits. Simply place selected grain in about one-inch of organic soil to enjoy  one of the most cleansing and nutritious juices available.   You will require a specific-type of juicer to turn the grown grass into a  chlorophyll cocktail. These can be obtained from Holistic Health Direct (  www.wholistichealthdirect.co.uk) or The Fresh Network (www.fresh-network.com).
Ann Wigmore was responsible for the popularity OF WHEATGRASS JUICE. In The Wheatgrass Book she provides a detailed description of wheatgrass, its  properties, uses and remarkable regenerative and anti-aging abilities - and also  includes the method of growing and juicing it.
Wheatgrass juice benefits the blood cells, bones, glands, hair, kidneys,  liver, muscles, spleen, teeth and other body parts. It can be applied to the  skin or scalp and used as a rectal implant via an enema to cleanse the  large intestine. It can be used to cleanse eyes, gums, sinuses and teeth.
Wheatgrass juice protects the lungs and blood from water and air pollution,  toxins, cigarette smoke and heavy metals. It is also a safe and extremely  potent aid to weight loss since it suppresses the appetite and stimulates  circulation and metabolism.
One handful will produce approximately an ounce of juice. This can be taken  alone, or mixed with other juices such as carrot and apple. Although the  grass can be cut and stored in the refrigerator for a few days, once juiced it is  not stable and will spoil quickly. Drinking it within fifteen minutes of  juicing is optimal. Sipping it slowly over a couple of minutes - on an empty  stomach - will provide the most benefits. Slowly increase from one ounce a day  to about four ounces each day will gently acclimatize your system to it.  Drinking it at mid-morning and mid-afternoon are great times for this green energy  pick-you-up.   Wheatgrass can also be taken in tablet and powder form - very useful when  traveling.
People sensitive, or even allergic to wheat and wheat products -  usually to the gluten found in wheat and also rye, barley etc - have no  problems with wheatgrass juice, since it contains no gluten in this form. Truly a  complete super food!
Supplies of kits, pills, powders etc are also available from Feel the  Difference Ltd (www.wheatgrassforlife.com).  Also check out www.starstuffuk.co.uk who produce a fantastic Australian  product - a really unique way to enjoy the benefits of wheatgrass.
According to homeopathic physicians, the following conditions are responsive (alongside specific individualized lifestyle changes) to the intake of wheatgrass  juice:  Acne,  Ageing (premature),  Anemia,  Arthritis,  Asthma,  Bladder disorders  Blood pressure (high or low),  Bone disorders,  Bronchitis,  Cancer,  Circulatory weakness,  Colitis,  Constipation,  Diabetes,  Eye disorders,  Fatigue,  Hay Fever,  Hair loss,  Heart disease,  Hypoglycemia,  Impotence,  Infection,  Kidney disorders,  Liver disorders,  Lung disorders,  Nervous disorders,  Skin disorders,  Ulcers,  Weight loss.
FORTY POINTS ABOUT WHEATGRASS AND ITS  NUTRITIONAL VALUES
  1. Wheatgrass juice is one of the best sources of living chlorophyll available.
  2. Chlorophyll is the first product of light and, therefore, contains more light energy than any other element.
  3. Wheatgrass juice is a crude chlorophyll and can be taken orally and as a colon implant without toxic side effects.
  4. Chlorophyll is the basis of all plant life.
  5. Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll. The brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly-oxygenated environment.
  6. Chlorophyll is anti-bacterial and can be used inside and outside the body as a healer.
  7. Dr. Bernard Jensen says that it only takes minutes to digest wheatgrass juice and uses up very little body energy.
  8. Science has proven that chlorophyll arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria.
  9. Chlorophyll (wheatgrass) rebuilds the bloodstream. Studies of various animals have shown chlorophyll to be free of any toxic reaction. The red cell count was returned to normal within 4 to 5 days of the administration of chlorophyll, even in those animals which were known to be extremely anemic or low in red cell count.
  10. Farmers in the Midwest who have sterile cows and bulls put them on wheatgrass to restore fertility. (The high magnesium content in chlorophyll builds enzymes that restore the sex hormones).
  11.  Chlorophyll can be extracted from many plants, but wheatgrass is superior because it has been found to have over 100 elements needed by man. If grown in organic soil, it absorbs 92 of the known 102 minerals from the soil.
  12.  Wheatgrass has what is called the grass-juice factor, which has been shown to keep herbivorous animals alive far longer than would be expected.
  13. Dr. Ann Wigmore has been helping people get well from chronic disorders for 30 years using wheatgrass.
  14. Optimum Health Resort in San Diego, CA also provides a mind, body, spirit healing environment offering wheatgrass in their healing center and 100's have experienced recovery from critical diseases.
  15. Liquid chlorophyll gets into the tissues, refines them and makes them over.
  16. Wheatgrass juice is a superior detoxification agent compared to carrot juice and other fruits and vegetables. Dr. Earp-Thomas, associate of Ann Wigmore, says that 15 pounds of wheatgrass is the equivalent of 350 pounds of carrot, lettuce, celery and so forth.
  17. Liquid chlorophyll washes drug deposits from the body.
  18. Chlorophyll neutralizes toxins in the body.
  19. Chlorophyll helps purify the liver.
  20.  Chlorophyll improves blood sugar problems.
  21. In the American Journal of Surgery, 1940, Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll to clear up foul smelling odors, neutralize strep infections, heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, overcome chronic inner-ear inflammation and infection, reduce varicose veins and heal leg ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many cases.
  22. Wheatgrass juice heals acne and even removes scars after it has been ingested for seven to eight months. The diet must be improved at the same time.
  23.  Wheatgrass juice acts as a detergent in the body and is used as a body deodorant.
  24. A small amount of wheatgrass juice in the human diet prevents tooth decay.
  25. Wheatgrass juice held in the mouth for 5 minutes will eliminate toothaches. It pulls poisons from the gums.
  26. Gargle wheatgrass juice for a sore throat.
  27. Drink wheatgrass juice for skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis.
  28. Wheatgrass juice keeps the hair from graying.
  29. Pyorrhea of the mouth: Lay pulp of wheatgrass soaked in juice on diseased area in mouth or chew wheatgrass, spitting out the pulp.
  30.  By taking wheatgrass juice, one may feel a difference in strength, endurance, health and spirituality - and experience a sense of well-being.
  31. Wheatgrass juice improves digestion.
  32. Wheatgrass juice is high in enzymes.
  33. Wheatgrass juicer is an excellent skin cleanser and can be absorbed through the skin for nutrition. Pour green juice over your body in a tub of warm water and soak for 15-20 minutes, rinse with cold water.
  34. Wheatgrass implants (enemas) are great for healing and detoxifying the colon walls. The implants also heal and cleanse the internal organs. After an enema, wait 20 minutes then implant 4 ounces of wheatgrass juice. Retain for 20 minutes.
  35. Wheatgrass juice is great for constipation and keeping the bowels open. It is high in magnesium.
  36. Dr. Birscher, a research scientist, called chlorophyll 'concentrated sun power'. He believes that chlorophyll increases the function of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus and the lungs.
  37. According to Dr. Birscher, nature uses chlorophyll (wheatgrass) as a body cleanser, re-builder and neutralizer of toxins.
  38. Wheatgrass juice can dissolve the scars that are formed in the lungs from breathing acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is minimized since chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production.
  39. Wheatgrass juice reduces high blood pressure and enhances the capillaries.
  40. Wheatgrass juice can remove heavy metals from the body
  41. Wheatgrass juice is great for blood disorders of all kinds.
PINES ORGANIC WHEATGRASS:  Mr. Seibold of Pines International discussed cereal grasses. “In order for wheat grass or barley grass products to supply the kind of concentrated nutrition they are known for, they need to be grown and processed in a manner that will protect and maximize those nutrients. Growing cereal grasses over the winter in a climate such as Kansas has been shown to produce the highest nutritional value, but the timing of the harvest is even more important.” He went on to say that cereal grasses are harvested at the “jointing stage”—the point at which the cereal grass plant reaches its highest nutritional concentration—which lasts only a few days in the early spring. Harvesting after that period results in greatly reduced nutritional value. After the jointing stage, the nutrition stored in the leaves goes toward developing the growing grain. After the grasses are harvested they are quickly processed.  Mr. Seibold discussed the production process. “At Pines we use a patented flash drying process that minimizes nutritional loss,” he said. “We quickly put the products in containers filled with nitrogen and store the unrefined product in freezers to prevent nutritional loss.”

The Basics of Sprouting Fodder

The Basics of Sprouting Fodder
Like sprouting grains for human consumption (wheatgrass, beans, alfalfa, etc), growing fodder as sprouted grains is relatively easy and has a rapid turn over from start to finished product.  The typical sprouting time for fodder is 6 - 8 days and can be adjusted depending on what stage of growth you want to harvest at and the type of animal your are feeding.  Many different grains can be used - wheatgrass, barley, oats, etc.  Barley is the most popular.  The basic method of growing fodder is as follows:
  1. Soak the sprout grains or seed mix you wish to sprout for about 6-8 hours

    (An optional pre-soak in a very diluted bleach water solution can be used if there are concerns regarding mold - see later in the article)
  2. Drain and spread into shallow trays that have drain holes
  3. Water a couples times per day, keep moist and drained for the duration of growing cycle at a temperature range of 60 to 75°F (the lower end of the range help to reduce mold production)
  4. Harvest at the desired stage of growth and feed to the animal
Here is what the growth cycle looks like for barley grass.
The fodder will grow from a dry seed to a 6 -7 inch plant in a little as 6 days.  With multiple trays being rotated on a daily basis, once can grow a continuous supply of fresh feed with very little space, power, and water requirements.   And the great part is that it is digestible by a great number of animals, from chickens and rabbits, to goat, horses, and cows, this living food can compliment the diets most farm animals.
Benefits of Sprouted Fodder
There are many benefits to be found from using fresh barley grass and spouted grains that has been organically and hydroponically grown. When barley is sprouted, it releases many vitamins and minerals as well as converting hard to digest starches in easily digestible proteins. Some of the benefits include:
  • Water use reduction and conservation compared to field irrigation
  • Reduction in overall daily feed costs.
  • Significant reduction if feed waste - the entire root mass is consumed with the grass
  • Increased nutritional value in the feed
  • High yield in a very small area
  • Increase your independence by growing food for your animals with no need for cultivated land
  • High digestibility
  • Vitamins & mineral saturation
  • Phytate reduction for pH normalization
  • Enzymatic activity increase
  • Increases in Omega 3, amino acids, natural hormones
  • Hedge the increase in feed costs by pre-buying large quantities of grain to have on hand
  • On-demand availability of fresh green feed 365 days a year - all season access.
Issues and Considerations
  • Mold and fungus growth can be a problem.  Sterile equipment, a low humidity environment, good temperature regulation, clean water, and good air circulation can all help avoid mold and fungus problems.  A one percent bleach solution can be used to wash the grains prior to the initial soaking. This will pre-sterilize the seed.
  • Depending on the sprouting setup - it can be labor intensive to rotate and clean trays and transport the "wet" feed.
  • Seed quality can play a factor in the overall success and quality of the fodder produced.
  • Storage of large quantities of grain needs to be considered in the costs and setup of a on-demand fodder system.  Keeping the stored grain from moisture and pests is important.
  • Some systems require power to operate and a lack of power/water in emergency situations needs to be factored in to the setup.
Conclusion:
When looking at starting a homestead or beginning to raise animals for personal consumption or as a commercial enterprise, the nutritional needs of the livestock being raised will become a key factor in the workload and expense of a setup.  Feed availability, quality and price are all continuous concerns.  With good nutrition and supplementation at the forefront - other issues of animal care can be reduced and minimized.
By growing sprouted fodder - one can provide a great source of nutrition to a wide range of animals (goats, rabbits, sheep, pigs, horses, cows)  and have the ability to locally acquire an on-demand feedstock.  This feed will improve the health of your animals, reduce your overall maintenance costs, and build more resiliency into the care of your animals.
I hope you find this article useful in your homestead setup and overall animal care.  As sprouted grains have numerous nutritional benefits for not only animals but humans as well, we are working on a number of articles that will highlight sprouted grains for human consumption.

How to Prevent Mold When Growing Wheatgrass

Instructions
Wheatgrass is one of the most beneficial natural medicines, with a number of internal and external uses. As recognition for wheatgrass increases, more people are choosing to grow their own gardens at home. While growing wheatgrass is very simple, there is one common yet preventable problem--mold. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 1
      Soak your wheat seeds for only 8 hours and then plant them as soon as they have been drained to help prevent mold when growing wheatgrass. Soaking seeds for too long promotes mold growth on the seeds themselves and is difficult to eliminate later. Additionally, plant less seed in each tray so that as the blades grow, there is more air circulation around the wheatgrass.
    • 2
      Add 10 to 20 drops of grapeseed extract to every 32 oz. of water and use the mixture to water your plants each day. Grapeseed will not harm or alter the wheatgrass in any way, but can help to prevent mold from growing.
    • 3
      Maintain temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees F when growing wheatgrass. While lower temperatures will not harm wheatgrass, it can slow growth. Mold tends to grow best above 80 degrees, therefore keeping the temperature down is a great way to prevent growth.
    • 4
      Keep a gentle fan directed towards the wheatgrass, particularly if you cannot keep the temperature below 75 degrees. Movement of air and temperature control, when used together, is the best way to prevent mold growth on your wheatgrass.
    • 5
      Inspect your wheatgrass everyday for airborne mold, characterized by spiderweb like formations that grow up the grass. This form of mold can simply be rinsed or wiped off without a problem.
    • 6
      Clean your trays with grapeseed extract, bleach, hydrogen peroxide or other solutions after harvesting and allow them to dry completely in the sun. Allowing your trays to soak in Pool Perfect, a product found at any pool supply, will help to prevent mold growth as well. Pool Perfect uses a natural enzyme to destroy any mold spores found on the trays.
    • 7
      Purchase a new variety of seeds if you still continue to see mold growth on your wheat grass. Because there are more than 1,500 types of wheat grown in the U.S., some varieties will be more resistant to mold when grown in your particular climate.

Tips On Home Made NFT Hydroponics Systems by Timothy Belk

Tips On Home Made NFT Hydroponics Systems
 by: Timothy Belk

Nft hydroponics systems have been round since the mid 60’s Allen cooper of England developed nutrient film technique.

The fact that nutrient film technique hydroponics has many advantages other soil culture, but the biggest is the fact that the root system of the plants have constant access to oxygen and that plants have access to as much or as little water as they need, this is important as one of the most common errors when growing is over/and under watering, and that hydroponics prevents this from occurring as large amounts of water can be made available to the plants roots and water that’s not used simply drains away, recalculating and then actively aerated, which eliminates anoxic conditions which can cause problems in root systems.

In siol, a grower needs to be very experienced to know exactly how much to feed there plants, too much and the plants will not be able to access oxygen, too little and the plants will lose the ability to transport nutrients, which are typically moved into the root while in the solution.

MAKING YOUR OWN NFT HYDROPONICS SYSTEM

One of the biggest mistakes “not the only one though” is using oval guttering for your homemade system, as the very nature of this system is to have a film of water “between 1mm & 3mm” over a fairly wide surface area, so as you can see, using a round water gully is somewhat pointless.

As you can imagine, using a squire gully makes life a lot easer as the fidally job of light proofing your water channel, by other means has already been taken care of, all that’s left for you is to blank of the end and cutting out some holes for your plants to grow in, also a way for the nutrients to recalculate back to your nutrient tank

My NFT hydroponics system that’s used in my greenhouse, I’ve built as a vertical NFT hydroponics system, as space is very limited, although I have managed to use every inch available, with 68 plant spaces available for my crop plants, and that just one half of my greenhouse, with plenty of room for more on the same side to add channels too.

Making your hydroponic NFT system water tight, at the same time as being able to remove the channels from a homemade NFT hydroponic setup is easy enough as long as you give a little thought into how.

As your water needs only to be 1mm to 2mm depth within the water gully channel, so any lip/ edges need to be as flat as the base of the gully, any extra height will increase the depth of the water dramatically, and may cause some water logging at the far end.

· NFT WATER PUMP to large/powerful

Using the right water pump is also very important, as having on that to large/powerful, will mean you having to restrict the flow from your reservoir, which will put a strain on the water pump and at the same time, may over heat your nutrient solution too as the max temperature for the water solution is 21c, any hotter and nutrient lock out will take over and some algae may start growing too.

· NFT WATER PUMP to small/underpowered

Depending on the high or distance your water nutrient solution needs to travel, take my vertical NFT hydroponics system for example, the height of which the water needs to travel is two meters, so a 1000 Litre an hour water pump is just right for the job, although with a horizontal NFT hydroponics growing system, getting hold of a pump that’s to small to manage the small vertical clime is fairly difficult, as I’ve even used a bird bath fountain pump before, but I don’t recommend these pumps as there not all that cheap and also break down more than most pumps too.

· NFT WATER TANK

Choose a Tank that’s no higher than your lowest gully, and of course it need to be light proofed to fervent algae growth and also large enough for lots of nutrient enriched water.

Because NFT hydroponic systems are so susceptible to pump and other failures, I use soaka felt that’s used in bench top growing to soak up excess water and to help with stopping plants from falling over, as plant roots grow into the felt side of the matting, and its ideal for NFT systems as a fail safe, if placed in the bottoms of the NFT channels it will help eliminate any dry spots accruing as the roots grow within the growing channels, as the roots grow, some damming of the water solution may accrue, and at least this felt will help with damming and also pump failure.

· NFT HYDROPONICS HOMEMADE MEDIUM “TOP TIP”

You’ll probably have noticed from looking at other nft hydroponics homemade system setups that square rock wool cubes are mainly used, but as my NFT system is a also homemade, I’ve tried keeping the cost down as 70 rockwool cubes would have cost a few quid. so to avoid this expense, my alternative, Earthwool zero carbon loft insulation, the roll covers 8sq meters, so I’m guessing that’s enough to fill my pots and the best part is that the hole roll cost me 5 quid from my local hardware store.

· REMEMBER

All rock wool fibre has a high PH value, which if not balanced to your hydroponic nutrients solutions PH value before use, will throw you your hydro fertilizer off wake, “above 6.5” so soak in a water solution of 3 Ph, over night in a bucket first, then squeeze out the excess water before installing.

Pots that I’ve made for the NFT gullies, all the PVC pipe is, 40mm waste piping, that cut to length, plus a bit extra so’s I can pull the pot out when needed, oh yeah a small groove that will let water underneath the pots easily, Earthwool zero carbon loft insulation IS VERY loose/ airy, and in my opinion is better than the ready bought cubes, as you can decide how airy you need your medium to be, and also mix with other hydro growing mediums if you wish.

If you do try these pvc pipe hydroponic pots with Earthwool zero carbon loft insulation then you’ll need to roll the earthwool up fairly tightly, so’s the nutrient rich water solution is drown up the rock wool.

Alternatively you could use rock wool slabs, take the plastic wrap off and cut the rock wool slab into slices, doing it this way would also keep costs down.

· GLUING YOUR HYDOPONICS HOMEMADE NFT SYSTEM TOGETHER

Choosing the right glue to keep nft systems water tight, and keeping the pvc pipes water-tight, well you have a couple of options, I’ve tried both of these and each work well, utility/ bathroom/kitchen, silicone sealant is fine to use, or pvc piping and guttering is also very good too, which ever one you do you use, you’ll need to lightly rub the surface where sealing is needed with some sand paper to ensure good contact.

The answer is both yes and no.

Yes, you can drink too much
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wheatgrass is notorious for having high levels of mold in it (read about growers struggling mightily with this in the ewheatgrass forum reference). These molds release a type of poison called called mycotoxins (look at the wikipedia reference). Mycotoxins are very unusual in that the effect is variable and very personal. In other words, 2 people could take the same amount of juice sourced from the same wheatgrass and have very different reactions.
Person 1 might be just fine...loved it.
Person 2 might be really negatively affected. The common complaints are headache, dizziness, nausea, a rush or vomiting. These are reactions caused by mycotoxins.
The strange thing is that the next time you get the juice, the reactions from the 2 people might be completely reversed.
For this reason, any establishment serving wheatgrass juice that might have a mold issue caps the amount served at 2 fl. oz. Health retreats where people go to change their health outcomes cap the oral amount at 4 fl. oz. and give up to an additional 8 fl. oz. through enema where the molds don't cause the same reaction.
Your indicators that the wheatgrass has mold are taste (it is pungent) and negative side effects. You should also note that wheatgrass is not for people who have a grass allergy.
No, you can't drink too much
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As explained above, the limits on wheatgrass juice consumption are linked to mold. If you have a clean source of wheatgrass juice, you can take as much as you want.

Wheatgrass is simply a highly bio-available food source. When grown without molds, it does not have the highly reactive or strong detoxifying effects that you will read about online. The secret to growing without mold is simple. Grow it outdoors, do so in a region that isn't too hot...and mother nature takes care of the rest. The mold/mycotoxin problem is really one of growing in trays, greenhouses and in the southern states.

Our company is DynamicGreens Wheatgrass and we grow wheatgrass outdoors in Canada. People using our juice take as much as 10 fl. oz. per day when addressing critical health concerns. Either fresh off the field or taken later in a flash frozen format, our wheatgrass juice is extremely well tolerated. We believe outdoor growth is critical and to allow it to be grown cleanly outdoors, we flash freeze the juice and then ship it overnight throughout North America. The best part is that people are having terrific health experiences and you can read about them in our forum here:

  • I am a former chef and a vegetarian, and I agree with "Dart", it can be harsh on your system, I used to drink it regularly, but as a diabetic I have had to stop.

    Like any strain of pure juice, it has many properties, it can also be a strong diaretic, not to mention a cleanser in the bowel, a small amount goes a long way, I used to also mix it with carrot juice for a bit of a tone down, with a bit of tabasco or lemon juice it is a bit more drinkable, just be careful.

  • Yes.

    Drinking about 2 oz a day is about the maximum amount you should consume. It is very hard on your internal system. It can also detoxify you too fast and too much that it taxes your body.

    It also contains oxalic acid (the concentrated stuff in BarKeeper's friend and BonAmi cleansers). This chemical is a chelator and binds to metal ions. So it can bind up all your iron, copper, magnesium, maganese, selenium, and other ions (like calcium, potassium, sodium) that are needed for the body to work efficiently.

LYMPHATIC CONGESTION
and the
MUCUS CONDITION

Denatured foods and a toxic environment are placing extreme stress in our bodies. More and more people are experiencing tender lymph glands in the neck, armpits and groin area. This is a sure sign of accumulating toxins. Antibiotics are continually given out freely to an already failing immune system. The lymph must be cleansed and stimulated naturally so that the immune system has an opportunity to rebuild.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEMThe lymphatic system is like an ocean within the body. 90% of water in the body is lymph while the rest is blood, intracellular fluid and cerebral-spinal fluid. Lymph is a colorless fluid that travels throughout the body in vessels alongside the arteries and veins of the blood. It is a series of beaded capillaries that flow through ducts and nodes (glands) that collect and circulate the lymphatic waters. Lymph fluid contains salts, electrolytes and nutrients.
The right lymphatic duct collects lymph from the upper right quarters of the body into the right internal jugular vein. Lymph from the rest of the body is carried by the thoracic duct to the left internal jugular vein.
Lymph is principally associated with the skin, mucus membranes and glands. It lies just under the various layers of the skin. There is no pump to move the lymph like the heart pumps the blood. Lymph moves by stimulation through movement and exercise, also by the electro-magnetic energy system of the body.
Blood travels throughout the body, feeding cells with nutrients. It then gathers wastes from the cells and dumps them into the lymphatic system .The lymph then carries the waste products to the “(exit doors)” for toxins, which are the liver, colon, lungs, skin, bladder and kidneys to be eliminated from the body.
LYMPH NODESThe lymph flows periodically through small filters called lymph nodes. These nodes are the familiar glands that get swollen and tender when infection is present in the body. Nodes vary from the size of a pinhead to that of a lima bean. There are singular nodes throughout the body but most gather in clusters in the neck, armpits, groins, and across the abdomen and spleen, the normal function of the nodes is to neutralize, and eliminate any poisons, bacteria or infectious microbes that may be present through the assistance of the immune system. The immune “army” gathers its forces in the nodes.
Edema which is a collection of fluid in the tissues may be caused by a blockage in the lymphatic channels or by their surgical removal. An example of the latter is the swelling of the arm which sometimes occurs after removal of the breast and auxiliary lymph nodes in cases of breast cancer.
INTESTINAL LYMPHThe center of the lymphatic system is in the abdomen. Cellular debris from every part of your body washes into this lymphatic ocean in your lower abdomen area. There the colon, whose outer surface is covered with lymph glands collects these wastes and passes them out of the body through the bowels. The lymph in the villi of the small intestine moves the waste out to the lymph of the colon. Congestion of lymph in the small intestine causes poor absorption of nutrients as wastes due to the build up of wastes. The colon's inner lining is a thin mucus membrane which excretes lymphatic wastes as mucus, and exerts control over all membranes in the body. If the colon is congested with toxins, these toxins will back up into the lymphatic system, stress the immune system, and travel throughout the body.
BOWEL DISORDERSInflammatory bowel disease such as colitis, diverticulitis, Crohn's disease and celiac disease, as well as irritable bowel syndrome of spastic colon and chronic diarrhea nearly always occur in conjunction with lymphatic congestion. The lactealducts throughout the intestinal tract, the lymphatic vessels, the lymph nodes and the Peyer's patches are all involved if the condition becomes inflammatory. Inflamation in the walls of the intestines due to these disorders often cause the lymph fluid itself to become toxic to the entire body, and particularly to the liver.
MUCUS CONGESTIONAnother part of the lymphatic system involves the mucus membranes. Mucus is a slippery substance secreted from the lymphatic system and synthesized from the sugars, fats and proteins floating in the lymph. A certain amount is needed to lubricate and moisten our body's inner surfaces. Often excessive mucus is produced as a protective response to irritating toxic wastes and infection. As wastes pile up in the lymphatic system, especially the colon, the respiratory system becomes an extra landfill sites for the colon. Mucus membranes in our lungs, throat and sinuses disgorge the excess mucus. Colds, post nasal drip, sore throats and plugged ears are warnings that mucus congestion is acute in the lymphatics. Asthma, bronchitis and emphysema are a result of efforts to dump excess mucus.
The liver also attempts to burn excess bodily “trash”, producing fevers, and the spleen creates cysts to store the toxic waste. The mucus eventually moves back into the bloodstream, over stressing the immune system until every part of the body is affected. Excess mucus encourages parasites, candida yeasts, bacteria and viruses to thrive in our colon, and lymphatic ocean and feed on toxic wastes. An accumulation of toxins and a congested lymph can result in gout, arthritis, heart disease, cancer and other degenerative disease. Certain forms of cancer cells spread by feeding on the stagnant and useless fats that clog the lymphatic waterways.
SPLEENThe spleen is largely made up of lymphoid tissue. It is located on the left side of the upper abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm and above the left kidney. It acts much like lymph nodes by filtering the blood. The white cells manufacture lymphocytes and monocytes for the immune system. The red cells act as a blood bank for several hundred mililitres of blood.
The spleen plays an important role in the destruction of worn out red blood cells. It removes the iron and oxygen from the cells; iron and oxygen are then reused by the bone marrow to make new red blood cells. Another job of the spleen is the production of antibodies for use by the immune system. If the spleen is surgically removed from the body, its functions are taken over by other organs, such as the liver, but with added stress to those organs.
IMMUNE SYSTEMThe immune system is basically the thymus system with all the lymphatic tissue in the body, the liver and spleen, the thymus gland itself, the tonsils, the appencix, the Peyer's patches in the small intestine, and all the lymph nodes and lymphatic channels. The lymph vessels pick up infecting organisms or foreign particles throughout the body and delivers them to the nodes, where defensive agents await them. Here scavenger cells engulf and consume them. Lymphocytes and antibodies are manufactured in the nodes in order to destroy them and prevent these toxins, bacteria and viruses from entering the blood stream.
ROOT OF THE PROBLEMYears of constipation along with excessive mucus build up in the colon are the underlying causes of lymphatic congestion. The colon's mucus membranes become swollen with thick mucus deposits which swell, stretch and weaken the colon. The resulting distorted shapes causes irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Hemorrhoids are a sign of the overloading of oily debris. Diverticulitis is an advanced stage of colon deterioration. As long as the colon is congested, the lymphatic ocean will remain polluted. As long as the colon is congested, the lymphatic ocean will remain polluted.
ALLERGIESAs mucus accumulates around the small intestine, it interferes with digestion and assimilation in the gut, and causes simple food allergy. The small intestine has a relationship to the brain. When it is distressed, mental confusion and emotional discomfort can be the result.
GARBAGE INTAKETake stress off the intestines and lymphatics by reducing “food garbage” intake from the diet. This is the first way of reducing the primary cause of mucus congestion that causes sticky lymph from not moving through its system. Milk and milk products are the primary culprits. Sugar, hydrogenated oils, and refined foods also must be eliminated.
HERBSSome commonly used herbs are Red Clover for the lymph and Echinacea. Goldenseal and Ginseng are good for the immune system. Drinking 4-5 cups of cucumber juice a day for one week will purify the lymphatic system.
CLEANING HOUSE“Cleaning up the pollution” is the solution. Cleanse the colon with flax fiber, and bentonite which is a hardened mucus dissolver. Remove the mucus and debris with several colonics. Stimulate the lymph with exercise, deep abdominal breathing, rebounding, dry skin brushing, abdominal castor oil packs, and herbs. Onion is the “Queen” of the mucus dissolvers. Swedish massage and Manual Lymph Drainage can be helpful.
DRY SKIN CLEANINGUse a natural bristle brush with a long handle to brush the skin while dry, before a bath or shower and again before bed. Brush towards the lymph nodes, up the legs, up the arms, towards the heart. Be careful brushing around the breasts . If this is too difficult for you, just brush in a circle motion until the skin is a light pink color. This will feel quite invigorating, and it will stimulate the lymph.
